Carlina Rivera Coalition Grows with Endorsements by Asm. Brian Kavanagh and Tenants PAC

With Kavanagh endorsement, Rivera builds broad-based support from local Assemblymember representing majority of district

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Support from local and city-wide stakeholders continues to grow for Democrat Carlina Rivera in her bid to succeed Council Member Rosie Mendez in Manhattan's 2nd Council District. This week, Rivera picks up her latest high-profile representative with the endorsement of State Assemblymember Brian Kavanagh (D - Manhattan). In announcing his support, the six-term state representative, whose Assembly district overlaps with almost half of Council District 2, is praising Rivera as a tireless community advocate and frequent partner on our most important issues, including housing and tenants rights.

"I've worked with Carlina Rivera on countless local issues over the years as a community activist, Democratic District Leader and most recently, in government," said State Assemblymember Brian Kavanagh. "Carlina's passion for our neighborhoods and broad knowledge of the issues we face make her the ideal representative for our families in the City Council. Specifically, as an organizer and caseworker, she has the housing experience we need to keep people in their community. I'm proud to endorse Carlina Rivera for City Council, and I look forward to continuing to partner with her in the years ahead."

In addition, Rivera gained the support of Tenants PAC, New York's leading organization supporting pro-tenant candidates for public office.

"It's an honor for me to have the support of Assemblymember Brian Kavanagh and Tenants PAC," said Carlina Rivera. "For over a decade, Brian has been our voice in Albany, standing up for working families and fighting against the big monied interests that have made the community unaffordable to so many long-term residents. His support is so important to my candidacy for Council, and I look forward to joining him in the fight for our beliefs and values."

Now in his sixth term representing Manhattan's 74th District in the Assembly, Kavanagh has been a leading voice in the fight to reform State government, as well as a staunch protector of affordable housing, the environment and gun safety. Assemblymember Kavanagh currently Chairs American State Legislators for Gun Violence Prevention, the State Caucus of Environmental Legislators, and the Assembly Committee on Consumer Affairs and Protection

In endorsing Rivera, Kavanagh joins a growing list of local progressive elected officials at all levels of government who have announced their support for the leading Democratic candidate.

Carlina Rivera is a lifelong resident of the 2nd Council District. She was a member of Community Board 3, Democratic District Leader of the 74th Assembly District, and a member of the Tenants Association in her building. Most recently, she served as Legislative Director for Council Member Rosie Mendez, where she was tasked with helping shape legislation and policy to address homelessness, improve health, regulate the recent spate of new construction, take on landlord harassment, and save taxpayer dollars by improving inefficiencies within city agencies.

The Democratic primary election will be on Tuesday, September 12th.
