Governor Andrew Cuomo Endorses Brian Kavanagh for State Senate

New York - Today, Assemblymember Brian Kavanagh’s campaign for State Senate was endorsed by Governor Andrew Cuomo.

Governor Cuomo said: “We need leaders in the State Senate who will fight for a more progressive future for New York and I’m proud to endorse Brian Kavanagh for the 26th State Senate district. In the Assembly, Brian has been a relentless advocate for all New Yorkers, working diligently to get illegal guns off our streets, protect our environment, and preserve affordable housing. Now, as the next State Senator for Manhattan and Brooklyn, I know Brian will work with me to continue New York’s proud tradition as the progressive capital of our country. Brian has my full support.”

Brian Kavanagh said: “I’m grateful for Governor Cuomo’s support and for his leadership on so many issues of concern to the residents of the 26th senate district, from marriage equality, to a $15 minimum wage and stopping gun violence. I look forward to continuing to work with him to deliver real results that make a difference in the everyday lives of New Yorkers.”

Kavanagh currently represents the 74th Assembly District and is running for State Senate to represent the 26th Senate District, which includes lower Manhattan and parts of Brooklyn. Kavanagh is one of New York’s leading champions of reform and is an outspoken advocate for changing the culture in Albany. As an Assemblymember, Kavanagh authored some of the most important bills to strengthen rent laws and expand tax breaks to freeze rents and keep housing affordable for seniors and people with disabilities. He helped lead the successful effort to ban the environmentally destructive practice of drilling for gas known as “fracking,” and is a leader in the fight against gun violence. Kavanagh is currently the Chair of the Assembly Committee on Consumer Affairs and Protection. His complete biography can be found at briankavanagh.org.

The 26th State Senate district includes the Manhattan neighborhoods of Battery Park City, Chinatown, the East and South Villages, the Financial District, Little Italy, the Lower East Side, SoHo, and Tribeca and the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Brooklyn Heights, Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, the Columbia Waterfront, DUMBO, Downtown Brooklyn, Fulton Ferry, Greenpoint, the Navy Yard, Vinegar Hill, and Williamsburg.
